New material of plant resources Sustimo®

Sustimo® is a plastic (biomass plastic) made from 100% plant resources, made from wood such as cedar and cypress trees and the sap of lacquer trees. As a highly heat-resistant biomass plastic with antibacterial and anti-viral properties, it can be used in a variety of applications.

Feature 1. Sustainability|Sustainable raw materials

The materials used as ingredients are wood powder from finely milled wood such as cedar and cypress, and the sap from poison oak.

-Timber

Wood not usable for building and furniture, as well as thinned wood, can be used as raw materials, thus making effective use of forest resources. As the tree grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and is able to store carbon in trees and soil, and release oxygen into the atmosphere. Since a full-grown tree cannot fix carbon dioxide in its body, it needs to be cut down and replaced with a new tree to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions. Sustimo® uses carbon dioxide immobilized wood, so the more you use it, the more you reduce the total amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

-Lacquer

The sap of the poison oak (lacquer) is a milky white sap which exudes from the bark when it is scratched. It is a natural resin from which sap can be collected when the tree is 10 to 15 years old. Lacquer has been used by humans for more than 9,000 years as paints and adhesives, however, it is not used much nowadays. Lacquer is a natural resin which, like natural rubber, can be cultivated and harvested continuously, so it is a natural material with low environmental impact. It can also be used as a raw material for Sustimo® after it has been harvested, and once harvested, poison oak trees can be replanted to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions.

Feature 2. Thermo|Heat-hardening properties

Lacquer has two characteristics: it hardens by appropriate humidity and enzymatic action, while it also hardens by heat. Sustimo® is a new type of thermosetting biomass plastic molded by utilizing the heat-hardening properties of lacquer.

Since the new material “Sustimo®” is made from natural wood, it does not affect the total amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere when burned after use. It is a completely new, environmentally friendly plastic for the next generation with both environmental friendliness and functionality.
In addition, the antibacterial*1 and antiviral*2 properties of Sustimo® have been proven by the Kanagawa Prefectural Industrial Research Institute, a local independent administrative agency, making it a recommended material for use in highly public applications.

Sustimo® is the name of the patented technology for molding material/molding body/molding method developed by deeplus and Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute.
The name “Sustimo®” comes from the use of sustainable raw materials, such as wood and lacquer, and the fact that the properties of lacquer, which hardens with thermo heat, are utilized.
